Ingredient Spotlight: Davana
Posted on August 25 2018
Our beard goods are crafted from all-natural ingredients, with scent compositions inspired by the seasons and built upon the tenets of natural perfumery. In this series, we shine the spotlight on the ingredients that make Dragonsea beard oils, balms and waxes so intoxicating.
Botanical Name: Artemisia pallens
Origin: India
Process: Steam Distilled Essential Oil
Plant Part: Leaves
Note: Middle
Aroma: Exceptionally rich, penetrating, strongly boozy (of dried fruits), sweet/herbaceous aroma; has warm, balsamic, woody and bittersweet undertones and a slight camphoraceous note.
If you note something that evokes an air of divinity in Dragonsea, that's probably Davana doing its thing. It is offered daily by the faithful to Lord Shiva, the God of Transformation at his altars.
If that wasn't divine enough, a certain molecule in the plant that is responsible for the scent is also an insect repellent. In areas where insects carry things like malaria, that little molecule is a little miracle.
Today Davana is cultivated primarily in a few of the southern states of India, but you won't find it growing in the wild. It once did in this region, where it is believed to have originated, but young plants need to intensively babysat during their first month of life. The wild life is not for them.
Too bad for the butterflies, as the larva of a whole bunch of species adore munching on the stuff.
From gods to butterflies, Davana is some magical stuff.
